Toward Q2: Update

Welcome to the first issue of Q2 eNews for 2009.

When we met with Queensland communities last year you highlighted the need for more reliable transport systems and opportunities to help protect our environment.

We have listened and have taken action.  The Queensland Government recently released initiatives to relieve congestion and help people become clean and green energy users.

I appreciate your involvement in the Toward Q2 program and will keep you up-to-date on further progress as we move through 2009.

Anna Bligh MP, Premier of Queensland

Better public transport

We want better public transport - that is why we have put new buses on the roads and introduced an eRail SMS and email alert system for trains.

The new improved bus services, starting on Friday 23 February, will deliver almost 1000 new services to commuters in Brisbane city and Brisbane's northern, southern and north-west suburbs.  This provides for an additional 64,000 commuters a week and is made possible through a record $6.8 million investment by Translink.

Train passengers can better plan their journey as they can now receive updates on unplanned delays, disruptions and cancellations across the Queensland Rail suburban rail network.  This new technology, known as the eRail SMS and email alert system, is available 24/7.  You can register for eRail updates at www.qr.com.au by following the eRail link.

ClimateSmart Home Service - saving the environment

Toward Q2 sets a target of cutting Queensland's carbon emissions by one-third throughout the next 12 years.  We are working toward this with the introduction of the new $60 million ClimateSmart Home Service.

As part of the service an electrician can visit your home to conduct an energy audit and provide energy advice or energy saving tools, such as light bulbs, all for just $50.  With these small changes, you can make your house greener and save up to $250 on water and energy bills each year.

Home visit appointments can be made at www.climatesmarthome.com or by calling 13 20 40.

We have also introduced new housing regulations to help combat climate change.  From 1 March, all new houses in Queensland will be required to achieve a minimum 5-star (out of 10) energy equivalent rating.  This will mean environmentally smarter homes in your neighbourhood and your town.

Queensland tennis back on centre court

Tennis is back in Brisbane as the new Queensland Tennis Centre opened recently to international acclaim.  The new centre gives us all a chance to make Queenslanders Australia's most healthiest people.

The 23 international standard courts, which include clay, grass and hard-court surfaces, are available at the centre for public use.  To book a court email info@queenslandtenniscentre.com.au or telephone (07) 3120 7999.

The new $82 million state-of-the-art facility will help budding young Queensland players acquire a broad range of skills on the different tournament surfaces used around the world.  For more information about the facilities and coaching opportunities visit www.queenslandtenniscentre.com.au

Flick the switch for Earth Hour

It's lights out again for Queensland Earth Hour 2009.  On Saturday 28 March, Queensland Government buildings will plunge into darkness as we flick the switch for Earth Hour.

I encourage all residents and businesses to get involved in this global initiative to raise awareness about climate change.  To sign up for Earth Hour 2009 or for more information visit www.earthhour.org

Q2andYou - our next consultation

Last year you put forward some excellent ideas on how to shape our future.  This year the Ideas Festival will challenge you to put them into action on Q2andYou day.

A facilitator and panel will challenge you to come up with creative solutions to some of the suggestions put forward in the consultation process.  The workshops will take place at the State Library of Queensland on Wednesday 25 March.  There will be three, two-hour sessions running at 10.30am, 2.30pm and 5.30pm.

Come along and see what you can do to make tomorrow's Queensland even better.  To register your interest in attending one of the workshops phone (07) 3405 5215.
